10 Key Pieces for Spring 2012

Even as the fall 2012 shows currently take place, my focus remains on spring 2012 fashion trends. I prefer to start my spring shopping right after the holiday season in January. By that time, I'm longing for warmer weather, longer days, and more sunshine. With spring fast approaching, it's time to focus on key pieces to update my wardrobe.

So what's on my radar? I'm currently stocking up on: pastel tops and lightweight sweaters in shades of mint and peach, floral trousers, and neon accessories. So what's on the radar of fashion industry professionals? According to fashion forecasting firm WGSN, here are the 10 items you should be stocking up on for spring 2012:

1. the parka - a key piece for the sportswear trend, as seen at Michael Kors and Acne.
2. the waterfall jacket - a new twist on outerwear spotted on the runways at Preen and Givenchy.
3. the 1950s shirtwaister dress - Jen Kao and Margaret Howell sent ladylike and figure-flattering versions down the runway. Accentuated waists are key to this look.
4. the 1960s dress - think minimalism and A-line, as done by Dolce & Gabbana and Holly Fulton.
5. the peplum dress - the Duchess of Cambridge helped to bring peplums into the spotlight, and they're popping up on tops, skirts, and dresses. Cushnie et Ochs, Vera Wang, and Jason Wu are prime examples of how to incorporate the waist-defining trend.
6. the dirndl skirt - a very retro shape with a nod to the 1950s, as seen at Jonathan Saunders.
7. the printed, tailored trouser - Zara, J. Crew, and Anthropologie have plenty of options this season, especially floral versions. Erdem's floral pair is my top pick.
8. the long, high-waisted pencil skirt - the key length hits below the knees, as seen at Lanvin.  Remember to pair with a leg-lengthening shoe for the most flattering effect.
9. the sports tank top - whether embellished, color blocked, or made of mesh, it's an indication that the Olympics are near. Isabel Marant and Peter Pilotto showed sporty and scuba references.
10. the tribal top - it's colorful, with embellished necklines or hand knit fabrications, as seen at Burberry or Jen Kao.
